Email email hidden; JavaScript is required to get flyers, a sign and a t-shirt, and let her know when you can help, so she can keep track and help you find a time & place that’s convenient for you and effective, with lots of voters. Pass out our information during Early Voting and/or on Election Day. Take a folding chair and plant a sign next to you, or stand and wave a sign — whatever works for you! A couple of hours, here or there, would be great!

Canvass with us, or walk your own neighborhood and talk to your neighbors.

We’re only talking to people who are likely to vote our way — IF they go vote. They may need a little information about our campaign, or information about voting — like where is the nearest early voting site (see map) and what hours is it open (7am – 7pm daily through Nov. 4). They may simply need a little reminder to return their mail-in ballot. Wear your Mariella Smith T-shirts! 👕 If you don’t have one, we’ll give you one, and we’ll give you our flyers to pass out, or leave at the door for people who aren’t home.

La Gaceta Endorses Mariella Smith

I’m proud to have earned endorsements from the 3 newspapers serving our diverse community: the Tampa Bay Times, the Florida Sentinel Bulletin, and La Gaceta! The third one, La Gaceta, is the Tampa-based tri-lingual newspaper that serves the Hispanic communities of Central Florida. They say:

“The easy choice in this race is Mariella Smith. She is a fourth-generation Tampa native. She is from a Cuban mother and an Anglo father. For years, she fought, cajoled and worked with city, county and state governments to help the neighborhoods in which she lived and the issues for which she is passionate. She is knowledgeable and willing to compromise but committed to her beliefs of what makes a community better. She would be a welcome addition to the County Commission. La Gaceta confidently endorses Mariella Smith for District 5.

Endorsed August 10, 2018 & October 12, 2018.

Les Miller

County Commissioner Les Miller endorses Mariella Smith

Hillsborough County Commissioner Lesley “Les” Miller, Jr. has endorsed Mariella Smith for the countywide District 5 seat on the Hillsborough County Commission.

“In my years of service on the County Commission, I’ve seen Mariella Smith come forward countless times as a community leader supporting better transportation and transit, and environmental protection,” said Miller. “In 2012, Mariella was appointed to represent our citizens on the County’s Economic Prosperity Stakeholder Committee on which I served as Vice-Chair. On that committee, Mariella worked for a stronger, more diverse economy and a better quality of life in Hillsborough County. As a Commissioner, Mariella will be a strong advocate for good jobs, affordable housing, equality and human rights, so that opportunities to prosper in Hillsborough County will be open to everyone. I fully endorse Mariella Smith and I look forward to working together with her on the Hillsborough County Commission.”

Mariella Smith

Mariella Smith has filed to run for Hillsborough County Commission

MARIELLA SMITH, a long-time advocate for environmental protection, transportation and smart growth, has filed to run as a Democrat for election to the Hillsborough County Commission, Countywide, District 5. Smith is challenging Republican Commissioner Victor Crist who is running for the District 5 seat in the general election in November, 2018. Crist is attempting to switch seats with County Commissioner Ken Hagan, so they both may evade the voter-enacted term limits which bar them from running again in the same district, after already serving two terms on the County Commission. Crist is a career politician who has held office for 26 years.

“It’s time to stop the musical chairs by the same old politicians who are more interested in deals for special interests than serving our citizens.” said Smith. “I will be a strong advocate for smart growth, good government, and transportation solutions that work.”

County Commissioner Pat Kemp is endorsing Mariella Smith. Commissioner Kemp says “Mariella has been a tireless advocate for our neighborhoods and our environment. Mariella has spent decades working for smarter growth and transportation investments that will get us out of gridlock. I look forward to serving on the County Commission with Mariella Smith so we can work together to build a prosperous future for Hillsborough County.”

Smith has marshaled citizen activists to stand before the County Commission countless times over two decades, addressing the Board on issues affecting communities from Ruskin to Tampa to Keystone.

“I will always put the interests of our communities and citizens first.” said Smith. “I will work for open, honest and transparent government and will firmly oppose corporate giveaways and secret dealings. I will protect our environment, our neighborhoods and our citizens’ civil rights.”

Mariella Smith’s campaign will kick-off with a fund-raiser and friend-raiser at the Italian Club, 1731 E. 7th Ave. in Ybor City, on January 23, at 5:30 pm. All are welcome.
